Being sued by the collection laughing

2008 I had a bank account that was closed with a negative balance. The account was closed and written off and sold to a collection agency, And re-sold in 2010 to another collection agency. I was contacted by a third-party law firm saying I’m being sued by the original bank who sold the account back in 2008 for approximately $5000. Can I be sued by the current law firm collection agency if the original bank sold the account in 2008? Does the seven year apply in this case?
